I decided to step out of my comfort zone for my SAMO and visit the Northbrook Public Library to see the screening of American Creed. I have never seen the film before and had no previous knowledge about what the film was going to be like since I wanted to go in with an open mind. Nonetheless I went with my brother Steven (50000cities1.home.blog) to the library. After a very short drive we walked into the library’s theater and I was quite happy to see familiar faces of people who were in different CST classes at Glenbrook North who came to see the film as well. The movie was free was a nice relief since I didn’t have a lot of cash on me. The theater was packed with a ton of different citizens who came to watch the movie.
The film was about immigration and how everyone went through it at one point to get to America but how immigration has changed to the point how now people are discriminated because they came to America and how people want to kick them out of America and build a wall so nobody can enter illegally. The film started with an interview from Joe Maddon who is the manager for the Chicago Cubs. When I saw his face I was extremely excited. Despite not being a Cubs fan I was excited because I am a huge baseball fan and I couldn’t wait to connect baseball to my english class. In the film Joe maddon talked about how his hometown hazelton proposed a law to fine property owners and businesses for hiring people who were illegal immigrants. He was not in support of it and because of this he created a community center trying to ease tensions for the dominican population.
When I saw this it made me think about America today. Clearly immigration is a huge issue in our country today. There are people today who are awful and discriminate on others just because they are not “american”. There are bosses who won’t hire people just because they were not born America even though they can’t control that. This kid I know is from Chile. He’s a really nice kid and is on swimming and track with me. He is apart of a foreign exchange program so he is only here for one year. It pains me to imagine that if he lived here longer he may get discriminated just because he is not American. This film about immigration truly opened my eyes to the hardships some people have to face.
This film connected to my English class. In English we were assigned a project where I was assigned to read the book White Fragility. White fragility is about how if you question people on being racist they get really defensive about it. This book connected with the film because it really made me think about how people would react if we questioned them on immigration. Through my knowledge of reading the book and being in CST I came up with the conclusion that they would in fact get very angry over the accusation instead of trying to learn about immigration.
I am very glad that I chose to go to the library since it opened me up to a whole new field in immigration. If it wasn’t for this project I never would have gone to see this film. I learned that there are people in this world who discriminate others just because they are not American and how we can be shielded away from it because we don’t see it on a day to day basis but it is an important situation. I strongly recommend taking the time out of your day to watch American Creed when it is televised on PBS.
